How to Keep Your Sewage System in Great Condition

Whether your property has a septic tank, cesspit or sewage treatment plant, you may need to be aware of sewage maintenance and how to keep your waste management system in good working order. This will be different to what you may have previously known when you were connected to the mains sewage.

Regular sewage maintenance will help save you money in the long term and avoid repairs. Here is our guide to keeping your waste management system well maintained.

Sewage maintenance tips

Here are some tips to follow.

  • Be water-conscious. Too much water in your waste management system can affect its efficiency so you should monitor your water usage and avoid discharging more water into the system than it can handle.

  • Protect your tank and the surrounding area. Septic tanks, cesspits and sewage treatment plants are often hidden underground - including their soakaways. You should avoid building or putting anything heavy above the tank or soakaway as it can compromise the effectiveness of the system. It’s important to know where your waste management system is located.

  • Consider the products you flush. You should avoid flushing anything that isn’t biodegradable such as sanitary items, nappies or heavy chemicals. Any other non-biodegradable items will clog your pipes or your sewage system leading to costly repairs.

  • Choose natural cleaning products. Waste management systems use bacterial decomposition to break down solids so chemicals can kill the bacteria and make them unable to do their job.

  • Avoid waste management companies selling septic tank additives. These products are not necessary and are just an added cost you don’t need. Healthy septic tanks don’t need additives to function efficiently.
